I recently came across an article in Forbes that made me stop and think about where marketing is headed. We’ve spent the last several years talking about how artificial intelligence is changing the way we create content, reach audiences, and run campaigns. But this article raised an entirely different question. An AI marketing strategy needs to account for more than how businesses reach human audiences. It must also consider how AI systems evaluate the information available to them.

What happens when we’re no longer marketing directly to people, but to AI systems making purchasing decisions on their behalf?

Think about that for a moment.

For decades, marketers have worked to understand human behavior. What motivates someone to buy? What builds trust? What creates an emotional connection to a brand? We’ve developed entire strategies around influencing those decisions.

Now imagine a customer telling an AI assistant, “Find the best solution for my business within this budget,” and letting that assistant do the research, compare vendors, evaluate reviews, and potentially make the purchase.

No browsing through websites. No carefully crafted sales funnel. No conversation with a salesperson.

The AI evaluates the options and makes a recommendation, or even completes the transaction.

It sounds futuristic, but the foundation for this is already being built.

From Marketing to Humans to Marketing to Machines

An August 2026 Forbes Technology Council article explored the emergence of what some are calling business-to-agent marketing. The concept is relatively straightforward. Instead of trying to persuade a human buyer, businesses must also make their products and services understandable and credible to AI agents acting on that buyer’s behalf.

And that introduces an interesting challenge.

AI doesn’t necessarily evaluate businesses the way people do.

A beautifully designed website might impress a prospective customer, but an AI agent may be more concerned with whether it can verify your services, compare your pricing, understand your capabilities, and find credible evidence that your company delivers what it promises.

Your brand story still matters. But it may not be enough to get you into consideration. This is where an AI marketing strategy becomes important, helping businesses make their expertise, services, and value easier for AI systems to understand.

For marketers, this is a significant shift. We’re no longer thinking only about how to capture someone’s attention. We also need to consider how technology interprets and evaluates the information we’re putting into the marketplace.

What Does This Mean for Businesses?

I think the implications extend well beyond the marketing department.

Consider a business that has invested heavily in branding, advertising, and a beautiful website. The messaging sounds impressive, but the actual information about its services is vague. Pricing is difficult to understand. Customer reviews are scattered. Its expertise isn’t clearly demonstrated anywhere online.

A human prospect might still pick up the phone and ask questions.

An AI agent might simply move on to a competitor whose information is easier to evaluate.

That should concern business owners. An effective AI marketing strategy starts with making business information clear, accurate, accessible, and consistent across digital channels.

We’re entering an environment where clarity, consistency, credibility, and accessibility may become just as important as creativity.

Businesses will need to think more carefully about how they communicate what they do, who they serve, what differentiates them, and why customers should trust them.

And marketing teams will need to work more closely with sales, operations, and leadership to make sure those claims are supported by accurate information and actual business performance.

Does This Mean Traditional Marketing Is Becoming Irrelevant?

Absolutely not.

In fact, I would argue that strong branding and genuine relationships may become even more valuable.

AI agents operate according to the instructions and preferences of the people using them. If someone already trusts a particular company, that preference can influence what the agent considers or recommends.

And let’s not forget that not every purchase is transactional.

Choosing a strategic partner, hiring a consultant, selecting a financial services provider, or making a significant business investment involves judgment, trust, and relationships that cannot always be reduced to a set of specifications.

But even in those situations, AI may increasingly determine which companies make the initial shortlist.

The challenge isn’t choosing between marketing to humans and marketing to AI. It’s learning how to do both effectively.

What Should Marketers Be Doing Now?

I don’t think businesses need to panic or completely reinvent their marketing strategies tomorrow. But I do think they need to start asking better questions.

Can AI systems clearly understand what our company does? Is our website content accessible, accurate, and specific? Are we publishing information that demonstrates actual expertise, or are we simply producing content to fill a calendar?

Do our customer reviews, case studies, and third-party mentions reinforce the story we’re telling?

And perhaps most importantly, are we building a marketing strategy that can adapt as purchasing behavior changes?

These are questions worth addressing now, before AI-driven purchasing becomes more commonplace.

The Bigger Picture

Marketing has always evolved alongside technology. We adapted to search engines, social media, mobile devices, and digital advertising. Each advancement changed how businesses connected with customers.

But this one feels different.

For the first time, we’re seriously contemplating a purchasing journey where technology doesn’t just influence the buyer. It can actually become the buyer’s representative, conducting much of the decision-making process independently.

That doesn’t eliminate the need for marketing strategy. It makes strategy more important.

Because the businesses that succeed won’t necessarily be the ones creating the most content, spending the most on advertising, or adopting every new AI tool.

They’ll be the ones that understand how their customers make decisions, whether those decisions are made by people, machines, or some combination of both.

And they’ll make sure their businesses are positioned to be considered either way.

The question isn’t whether AI will change marketing. It already has. The question is whether your marketing strategy is evolving quickly enough to keep up.

Inspired by Forbes Technology Council’s August 5, 2026 article, “Marketing To An ‘Agentic’ Customer: How To Sell To An AI,” by Pratik Bhadra.

I asked her to send over what they were already putting out. Ten minutes into reading it, the actual problem was obvious, and it had nothing to do with volume. Nothing she’d published said anything a competitor couldn’t have said just as easily. Different logo, same words.

That’s the failure I see most often in specialized fields, and it costs far more than it looks like it should.

Generic messaging survives because nobody gets fired for it. Calling a company “trusted” or “customer-focused” is defensible in a way that a sharper, riskier claim isn’t. For a marketing team working against a deadline, that safety is appealing. Nobody has to argue with legal about it. Nobody has to worry it’ll age badly.

But an audience that actually knows the field can tell the difference between safe and substantive almost instantly. Buyers in a specialized industry have read a hundred versions of “innovative solutions” and “customer-first values.” They stopped noticing that language years ago. When a company leans on it anyway, it doesn’t read as professional. It reads as though the people behind it haven’t actually spent much time in the world they’re marketing.

This shows up most clearly on the pages a company treats as least important, the about page, the FAQ, the boilerplate paragraph at the bottom of every press release. Those are usually the first things written and the last things revisited, which means they tend to carry the vaguest language in the entire site long after everything else has been sharpened. A buyer doing real diligence often reads exactly those overlooked pages closely, because they’re looking for the parts a company didn’t spend much time polishing, on the theory that unpolished language reveals what a company actually thinks rather than what it wants to be seen saying.

Naming a real friction point, the specific regulatory pressure, the exact tradeoff a buyer is actually weighing, does something generic language can’t. It tells the reader someone behind the brand has genuinely done the work. That signal carries more weight than any tagline, and it’s also why so few companies attempt it.

Specificity is risky in a way vagueness never is. A specific claim can be wrong. It can be challenged by a competitor, or picked apart by a buyer who knows the subject well. Vague language avoids all of that by saying almost nothing. The tradeoff is that it also fails to say anything memorable, which in a small field where every credible voice is competing for the same limited attention, is its own kind of risk. Just a quieter one.

Back to the client from the opening. Once her team started naming the actual tradeoffs her buyers were weighing instead of the safe generalities, reach became less important. A smaller number of the right people started paying attention, instead of a larger number scrolling past.

The expense of staying generic isn’t really the wasted content budget. It’s the compounding cost of never becoming the name someone thinks of first. Specialized industries have a small number of genuinely credible voices. Being remembered requires being distinct, and being distinct requires saying something an audience hasn’t already heard from three other companies this month.

There’s also a newer cost that didn’t used to exist. Vague, safe language gives an AI system almost nothing to cite when someone asks it who the credible options are in a specific field. Specific claims and concrete proof points are what get surfaced. A page full of careful, inoffensive generalities is functionally invisible to a system trying to answer a direct question.

None of this gets solved by hiring a better copywriter. It gets solved when leadership is willing to put something specific enough on the record that a competitor could push back, or specific enough that it could theoretically age poorly. That’s an uncomfortable ask for organizations that have spent years rewarding caution in their public language.

It also requires leadership to sit through the discomfort of a first draft that names something plainly, rather than reaching immediately for the softer version. I’ve watched that instinct happen in real time during review meetings, a specific claim gets written, someone flags it as risky, and by the third round of edits it’s been rounded back down into the same safe language the company started with. Breaking that cycle usually takes someone in the room willing to ask why the softer version is actually better, rather than just more comfortable.

The companies I’ve seen actually pull ahead aren’t the ones with the largest budgets. A competitor does something and there’s pressure to respond in kind. Each individual addition seems low risk and low cost. Add them up over a year and a marketing team ends up stretched across a dozen initiatives, each one done at a fraction of the quality it would take to actually work.

I watched this happen with an organization that split its team across five content formats at once, video, a newsletter, a podcast, long form articles, and a heavy social cadence, none of them resourced well enough to succeed. Two formats, done properly, would have outperformed all five done adequately. The instinct to add more usually comes from a fear of missing something. What it actually guarantees is mediocrity spread across everything, rather than excellence anywhere.

Saying no protects both. It keeps a team from being pulled in directions that dilute their strongest work, and it keeps an audience from being asked to pay attention to something half finished.

Specialized audiences notice half-finished work quickly. A single format executed well earns more trust than a scattered presence across many. A team stretched across too many initiatives doesn’t just produce weaker work, it starts to lose confidence in its own judgment, because nothing ever gets the runway to actually succeed or fail clearly. Everything stays in a permanent state of “half finished”, which makes it nearly impossible to learn what’s actually working. Saying no to some things is partly what allows a team to get honest, useful signal on the things it kept.

One of the clearest tests of strong marketing leadership is asking whether an initiative serves a specific outcome the organization actually wants. The first is worth funding. The second is usually a symptom of watching competitors too closely rather than building toward anything in particular.

A useful habit here is writing down what specifically would have to happen for it to count as a success six months out. Not a vague sense that it went well, but a concrete outcome. Most initiatives that get proposed out of competitive anxiety fail this test immediately, because nobody proposed them with a specific outcome in mind to begin with. They were proposed because doing nothing felt uncomfortable, which is a very different thing from having a reason.

Before adding something new, I ask clients one question. If this succeeded completely, what would actually change? If the honest answer is not much, that’s a no, regardless of how good the idea sounds in a planning meeting.

Saying no disappoints people. Sometimes it’s a leadership team eager to try something new. Sometimes it’s the discomfort of watching a competitor do something and choosing not to react. Marketing leaders who hold that line consistently end up with a focused, recognizable presence. Leaders who can’t tend to accumulate a scattered set of initiatives that individually made sense and collectively add up to nothing memorable.

What makes this genuinely difficult is that saying yes rarely gets punished in the short term, and saying no rarely gets rewarded in the short term either. The cost of too many yesses shows up eighteen months later, in a brand that feels unfocused and hard to describe in one sentence. By the time that cost is visible, it’s no longer obvious which decision caused it, which is exactly why the discipline has to be maintained before the damage is visible, not after.

The instinct to add more never fully goes away. The discipline to choose less, and to do that less exceptionally well, is what actually separates strong marketing leadership from busy marketing leadership. Busy is easy to produce. Distinct almost never is.

What was notable was that four companies, describing what were supposedly meaningfully different businesses, had independently converged on nearly identical language. If the underlying businesses were as different as each claimed, the descriptions should not have been interchangeable. Marketing differentiation depends on communicating those meaningful differences clearly. The fact that they were nearly identical said something about how that language had been produced, and it wasn’t flattering.

The problem begins with what happens next. The new entrant borrows not just the general format of that language but its actual substance, softened just enough to avoid the appearance of direct copying. Repeat that process across enough new entrants over enough years, and an entire category’s marketing converges on the same handful of safe phrases almost without anyone intending it.

Once that convergence sets in, it becomes self reinforcing. A marketing team drafting new copy instinctively benchmarks against what competitors are already saying, treats that language as the established norm for the category, and produces something close enough to blend in. Each individual decision, in isolation, looks like reasonable caution.

The risk here isn’t that the language is inaccurate. The risk is that without marketing differentiation, buyers have no meaningful way to distinguish between credible options. Individually, none of it usually is. Innovation genuinely matters to these companies. Client relationships genuinely do, too. The risk is structural: when every credible option in a category describes itself in identical terms, a buyer loses any real basis for differentiating between them on the merits, and the decision shifts to variables the marketing never intended to compete on, price, an existing personal relationship, or simply whoever called first.

This is a worse outcome for the strongest company in the category than for anyone else. The gap between what a genuinely superior provider offers and what a mediocre competitor offers can be enormous, but if the language describing both reads identically, that gap becomes invisible to anyone evaluating from the outside. The best option in the room ends up competing on the same footing as the weakest one, purely because neither said anything a buyer could actually use to tell them apart.

Smart, capable teams fall into this pattern for a consistent reason. Sounding like everyone else carries less perceived risk than sounding distinctive, but it also makes marketing differentiation far more difficult. A specific point of view can be disagreed with. The generic version avoids both risks, at the cost of being forgettable to everyone who encounters it.

Internal review processes tend to reinforce this without anyone intending it to. A safe, familiar sentence moves through approval quickly because nobody can identify anything wrong with it. A specific, differentiated sentence draws questions, hesitation, and requests to soften it before it goes out. Across enough approval cycles and enough pieces of published content, an organization effectively trains itself to produce whatever survives internal review most easily, which is rarely the language that would actually differentiate it in the market.

The exercise worth running against any piece of positioning language is simple to describe and genuinely uncomfortable to apply. Take a sentence from the company’s current materials and ask whether a direct competitor could publish that exact sentence on its own site without anyone noticing the substitution. If the honest answer is “yes”, that sentence isn’t communicating anything distinctive yet, regardless of how polished it sounds.

Polish is a poor proxy for differentiation, which is precisely why this test matters. Plenty of interchangeable language is well written and professionally produced. The only question that actually determines whether it’s doing useful work is whether it could belong to any other credible option in the category. If it could, it’s decorative rather than functional.

The fix isn’t cleverness for its own sake. It’s specificity about what a company actually believes, actually does differently, or actually refuses to do that a competitor is willing to do. Sentences that meet that bar are the ones a competitor genuinely couldn’t publish, because they wouldn’t be true for them. Running this test across existing materials usually surfaces uncomfortable results. Most of a company’s current copy fails it. That isn’t cause for alarm so much as a starting point. The task isn’t rewriting everything at once. It’s identifying the handful of claims that are genuinely, provably true only for this company, and giving those the space to do the talking, instead of letting them get buried under the safer language surrounding them.

The four firms from that pitch deck week eventually did land on distinct positioning, though most of them took years longer to get there than they needed to. The one that got there first is, unsurprisingly, the one still winning the most competitive deals in that market today, a reminder that marketing differentiation can become a meaningful competitive advantage.
